UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - Residency Visas for Dependent Sons Can Now Be Renewed

Effective immediately, residents of the United Arab Emirates can renew the residency visas of their dependent sons who have reached the age of 18, and/or graduated from secondary school or university.

Residence for Dependent Sons

The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship announced that parents sponsoring their sons in the UAE will now be able to renew their sons’ residency visas beyond the age of 18 years.

  • Previously, dependent sons above the age of 18 could not be sponsored for residency by their parents, and had to apply for their own residence status as a student or employee.
  • The rules for dependent daughters have not changed – they remain on their parents’ visa with no age limit until they get married.
  • The residence permit for dependent sons over the age of 18 will be valid for one year, renewable once.
  • Applicants can apply through any government-approved offices for a fee of Dh 100, rather than under humanitarian appeals, as previously, which required a deposit of Dh 5000.
  • The supporting documents include the certificate of general secondary education or graduation certificate or the information from the university where the son studied, whether inside or outside the UAE, duly certified by his alma mater.
