GREECE – Original Birth and Marriage Certificates Now Required

Since Friday last week, the Ministry of Interior Affairs in Athens has been requesting original birth and marriage certificates to be submitted in support of applications for residence permits for the dependents of foreign nationals. No official announcement has yet been made, but this is expected imminently.

Document Preparation

It was already the case that birth and marriage certificates submitted in support of residence permit applications for accompanying spouses and children had to have been recently issued (no more than 90 days prior to the residence permit application) and had to be legalised in the home country and translated into Greek by a translator accredited with the relevant Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Now, however, the original documents must be submitted along with the translations, and since documents, once submitted, are not likely to be returned, it is recommended that foreign nationals bringing spouses and children to Greece obtain duplicate birth and marriage certificates wherever possible.

Action Items

  • Note that original birth and marriage certificates must now be submitted in support of residence permit applications for accompanying spouses and dependents, and will most likely not be returned. It is recommended to obtain duplicate documents where possible.
