CANADA - Strike Action Affecting Visa Processing Times

The Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) union is currently taking strike action. Processing times for visa applications have been affected and are taking several weeks longer than usual.

Affected Applications

So far, the strike is affecting services at Canadian diplomatic posts in China, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, the US, India, Colombia and Brazil. Diplomatic staff in other parts of the world may join the strike and so it is recommended to check this when estimating timing for a specific case.

All applications are affected but note that (unlike with the Israeli strike) applications are still being processed, albeit much more slowly than usual.

Action Items

  • Note extended processing time for visas for Canada, and factor in several weeks’ additional lead time for applications from affected countries
  • It is not yet known when the strike will end, and note that when it does, it will take some time for matters to get back to normal, as there will be a large backlog of cases.
